Training Volume vs. 10RM: What Should You Track?

Training volume and 10-rep max answer different questions.

Volume describes how much work you completed. A 10RM describes your strength in one exercise at roughly ten reps. Neither is the best score for every goal.

What is training volume?

Volume load is commonly calculated as sets × reps × weight. Three sets of ten with 60 kg produce 1,800 kg.

It is useful for comparing similar sessions, but it treats every kilogram and rep as interchangeable. Volume can rise because you added warm-ups or easy work. That does not prove strength improved.

What is a 10RM?

Your 10RM is the heaviest load you can lift for ten technically acceptable reps. A true test is demanding, so following your best set around ten reps is often enough. Moving from 70 kg × 8 to 70 kg × 10 at similar effort is clear progress.

Which metric fits the goal?

Maximal strength

A rep max or estimated 1RM is more specific than volume. If the goal is a heavier squat, bench press, or deadlift, heavier loading matters directly (ACSM position stand).

Muscle growth

Weekly hard sets are usually more useful than 10RM alone. Higher volume can support growth when the work is productive and recoverable, but more is not always better. Total volume load does not explain muscle growth by itself (Physiological Measurement).

General gym progress

Use both, plus consistency:

  • a strength marker such as top weight, reps at a standard load, or estimated 1RM;
  • weekly hard sets or exercise volume;
  • completed sessions over the month.

Why one number can mislead

Suppose bench press volume rises because you go from three to five sets, but your best set stays at 70 kg × 8. The extra work may suit a volume phase, or it may simply create fatigue.

If the same three sets move from 70 kg × 8 to 70 kg × 10, workload and rep strength improved together. The interpretation is much clearer.
